What Do You Own?

How would we respond to that question? Would we list all of the possessions that we have titled in our names? When we speak of things like assets and net worth we think of lists that entail items of value that we can claim, things that give us clout in this world. Sometimes we end up feeling important or secure or powerful because of the things we “own”. That is what the world wants us to think.

How should the question be answered from God’s perspective? When we shine the light of a relationship with Him on this question, do we come up with a different answer? Psalm 50:10 reminds us that everything on this earth belongs to God. 1 Timothy 6:7 instructs us that we brought nothing into this world, and we will take nothing with us when we depart. The truth is that we become stewards or managers of the things that God chooses to give us during our stay on this earth. A steward is one who manages property that belongs to another. What we are managing on this earth is God’s property to which He allows us to attach our name for a few years, whether it be homes, cars, money, etc. What kind of testimony do our lives portray when we consider the things for which we have been asked to be responsible as stewards? If we viewed our checkbooks or debit cards or credit cards, what story would be told concerning our stewardship and priorities?

The Bible has over 1,000 references to money or possessions. That number is second only to the number of references on the subject of love. Do you suppose God knew how much direction we would need when it came to the areas of giving and being good stewards of the things he has temporarily given us? Let us pray for His continued active input and direction as we attempt to glorify Him through the use of the things He is letting us borrow for a few years.

God bless you,
Doug
